ABOUT ME ☆ MIKAYLA SAVUTO ☆ SHE/HER ☆

I moved to NYC in 2009 to study Drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Following three years of injuries and frustration, I switched training programs and met the teacher who formally introduced me to Pilates and helped me find my flipside.

Through this teacher and the core principles of Pilates, I built a disciplined, fun, and empowering movement practice that opened up my body in my work as actor, allowing me to make stronger character decisions and overall move with more confidence on and off stage.

After college, I became comprehensively certified in Pilates at the rigorous and contemporary Kane School of Core Integration and began my teaching journey in 2016. I’ve been working as an Independent Teacher since 2018. Pilates is an infinitely adaptable modality: every body can benefit from Pilates. I’ve worked with populations including high school athletes, nonagenarians, pre/post-natal people, people in wheelchairs, and I frequently work with post-operative clients via physical therapist referrals

I started participating in distance running in 2018 as a way to make friends and find community. I ended up finding my flipside again: a love for the journey, not just the destination, a confidence in my ability to grow and get better even when falling flat on my face (sometimes literally!), and the unwavering belief that magic happens when I have faith that I can continue putting one foot in front of the other. In 2020, I became an RRCA-certified run coach. I specialize in helping new runners, runners new to racing, and runners returning from injury take their first steps towards having a sustainable, healthy, joyful relationship with running.

In addition my movement teaching work, I continue to work as an actor & voiceover artist, and I’m a current screenwriting MFA student with a focus on telling stories of queer, religious women in rural and middle America.

Modern Pilates with a joyful and inclusive twist.

Welcome to the flipside.

Core Beliefs

Inclusive

For too long Pilates has been associated with exactly one body - thin, white, and feminine, and the community has done little historically to challenge that status quo. I affirm that Pilates is for people of every gender identity, race, size, age, and ability.

Joyful

Moving our beautiful bodies should be a joy, not a chore. I commit to building a student-teacher relationship that is both educational and fun, and to actively chose language that makes my clients feel empowered, strong, and curious.

Technical

You deserve a teacher who is dedicated to your movement journey. After receiving my comprehensive certification from the rigorous and anatomy-heavy Kane School, I remain committed to continuing to learn from the cutting-edge minds of the movement industry.

Safe

Movement environments need to be safe to be effective. I promise to be mindful of my use of touch, respectful of client boundaries, and responsive to feedback. I make sure that all safety protocols, inclusive of both equipment/bodily safety and cleaning safety, are strictly followed.

Curve Care

Do you have scoliosis? Whether you had a fusion surgery, have been or are currently braced, or are au naturel, I’ve got your back.

Are you looking for a more therapeutic session to work on balancing the muscles affected by your scoliosis? Or are you looking for a muscle-burning fitness session that is mindful of your curves? No two scoliotic spines or humans are the same, so every body requires an individualized approach.

Every Curve Care session starts with an assessment and then moves through curve-specific breathwork, posture corrections, and exercises, all tailored to your specific needs and desires.

Prenatal and Postpartum

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or you’re a seasoned pro, Pilates is an excellent exercise modality to support you and your changing body throughout all the stages of your pregnancy and beyond.

In a prenatal session, we will focus on getting strong and preparing your body for baby and birth. We will also work on alleviating any pregnancy-related discomfort that may arise as your body changes.

In a postpartum session, we will focus on rebuilding your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. We will also mobilize joints and stretch and strengthen muscles that are stressed by the physical demands of parenting.

Please note: Pilates sessions are not a substitute for medical care or treatment. If you are unsure if you should begin or continue an exercise regimen, always consult a physician.

FAQ

  • The Short Version:

When you hire an independent teacher, you invest in a teacher who has a sustainable schedule and has more energy for you, a teacher who makes more money per session and can invest in that pricey continuing education course that will level up your sessions, and a teacher who is financially and emotionally able to nurture other ambitions such as a creative career or parenting and therefore avoid burnout. A happy teacher is a good teacher.

    The Long Version:

Under the traditional studio model, a teacher typically takes home 30-40% of the hourly rate you pay for their private, and they are paid as a W-2 employee. So if you pay $140 to the studio, the studio typically pays the teacher $42-$56 and the teacher pays income & SSI/MC tax on this entire amount, bringing that down to $31-$42, assuming ~25% tax rate. Studios do not typically provide any traditional employee benefits such as healthcare, continuing education stipends, paid time off, sick pay, transportation subsidies, or retirement account matching, so the teacher must use that $31-$42 to pay for their individual healthcare premium (on the low end, $700/month), required continuing education hours (~$100/hr), transportation, save to cover all unpaid leave, and contribute to a fully self-funded retirement plan. And because they are legally classified and paid as a W-2 employee, they are not able to deduct any of these essential expenses as business expenses. This works for people who are in the business part-time on top of another job or school, have a financially supportive partner/family, or are independently wealthy. It is not a sustainable way for an Average Jill to make a living and career.

When you pay an Independent Teacher, they typically spend 25-35% of your hourly rate on ‘direct’ costs like rent and credit card processing fees. So if you pay $140 to an Independent Teacher, they take home $91-$105. They still don’t receive any employee benefits, but because they are Independent (classified for tax purposes as a business, filing a Schedule-C or incorporated) they can pay use their business revenue to pay for their ‘indirect’ but essential business costs like their healthcare premium, continuing education hours, transportation, and contribute to their own retirement. Reductively, that means they can deduct all these essential expenses as business expenses, which means they do not pay taxes on any of these expenses and only pay tax on actual take-home income. Your teacher still won’t get rich teaching, but this makes it possible for your teacher to have a sustainable, long-term career without being an heiress or being married to one.

  • Every body is a Pilates body, and every body can benefit from Pilates.

Pilates teachers typically approach fitness holistically, with a focus on maintaining a mobile, healthy spine and strong, balanced torso musculature, including your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Pilates is an infinitely adaptable modality; It is an excellent low-impact modality for building stability and resiliency in joints and connective tissue and strengthening smaller “stabilizer” muscles. For this reason, it’s a popular exercise choice for people experiencing chronic back pain, recovering from an orthopedic injury or surgery, people living with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s, and pregnant people (with a physician’s approval). It is often used by physical therapists as a part of their work with patients, and physical therapists regularly refer patients to Pilates.

It’s also a great cross-training choice for busy athletes (just ask Lebron James) looking for a dedicated space to work on stability, flexibility, and address any minor aches, pains, and imbalances without adding too much additional physiological stress (that doesn’t mean it will feel easy!). Personally, I run 4x/week, Pilates 2-3x/week, and lift weights/strength train 2-3x/week, and I consider Pilates the foundation of all my movement work. And because of Pilates’ low-impact/low-stress nature, I’m able to maintain my Pilates practice during race training even as I get closer to race day and have to start cutting down my strength work so that I can up my running mileage.

Despite it’s feminine reputation, Pilates (he called it “Contrology”) was created by a man, Joseph Pilates, and the early development was done during his time interned in an all-male internment camp during World War 1. The method primarily focused on awareness and strength of the spine and torso musculature, and was initially used in the rehabilitation of injured male veterans.

Still not sure? Book a 15-minute call to discuss your needs and goals and whether Pilates is the right fit for you.

Please note that Pilates is not a substitute for medical care or treatment. If you’re unsure if you should begin or continue an exercise regimen, always consult a physician.

  • “Having a movement science degree and a past as a personal trainer, I can truly appreciate a knowledgeable, skilled professional trainer when I work with one. Mikayla is the best I have worked with; she is the combination of the consummate instructor and an amazing human being. She instructs with a balance of large movements and precise tweaks that completely change the emphasis of an exercise. It’s amazing! All the technique and aside, she is a joy to work with. Upbeat, fun, empathetic, and the best listener, and the sessions fly by with a well thought-out session accompanied with great conversation! Mikayla is also very attentive to my goals and limitations. Her expertise allows her to provide modifications and adjustments as necessary, ensuring that I am always working at a level that is challenging but that I trust to be safe, all while helping to motivate me and push myself to new limits and beyond my fears. We have been working together twice a week for years, and my body has internally and externally transformed. I’m stronger, leaner, more flexible, injury-free (!), and so grateful to have met her!”
